Brief Profile of Professor Benjamin Oluwole AKINYELE
Professor Benjamin Oluwole Akinyele was born on 3rd June, 1958 at Okeagbe-Akoko in Ondo State, Nigeria. He attended the Local Authority (L.A.) Primary School (1963-1969), Modern Secondary School (1969-1970), Omuo High School (now Omuo Comprehensive High School), Omuo Ekiti (1971-1975), The Polytechnic Ibadan (1976-1978) and gained direct entry admission to the University of Ilorin, Ilorin in 1980 to study Botany. After the mandatory one year service to the nation in 1984, he returned to the University of Ilorin to study for master’s and doctoral degrees in Botany with special interest in Plant Genetics and Biosystematics.
Prof. Akinyele started his lecturing career as an Assistant Lecturer in 1986 at the Federal University of Technology (now Modibo Adama University of Technology), Yola, Adamawa State. He moved to the Federal University of Technology, Akure as a Lecurer II in 1991 and continued to move up the ladder until year 2011 when he was promoted to the rank of Professor.
He lectures in the department of Crop, Soil and Pest Management (CSP) of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria and has acquired 33 years of university teaching and research experience, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. For many years and on different occasions, Prof. Akinyele served as the Departmental Registration Officer, as a member of the Departmental Examination Committee, as the chairman of Accreditation Committee of the CSP Department and representative of the Department on the Board of the School of Postgraduate Studies, as a member of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology Curriculum and Postgraduate Advisory Committees. Prof. Akinyele readily takes up administrative duties when assigned to him. He was once the Head of the Department of Crop, Soil and Pest Management and has served meritoriously in many other university committees and Boards. In all these assignments, Prof. Akinyele has earned the confidence of his colleagues and principals. He is currently the Director of Industrial Training Unit of the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
Prof. Akinyele has over 60 papers published in well refereed Journals of national and international repute. He has participated in many local and international courses, workshops and conferences. He has successfully supervised five (5) PhD and twenty-two (22) Master’s student projects and currently, he has seven (7) PhD and six (6) Master’s students under his supervision.
Prof. Akinyele has been to many Nigerian Universities as external examiner to examine PhD, Master’s and Undergraduate students. He has assessed eighteen (18) senior academics from sixteen (16) Universities in Nigeria for promotion to the ranks of Professor and Associate Professor.
Prof. Akinyele is happily married to Prof. (Mrs.) Bamidele Juliet Akinyele and they are blessed with lovely children and grandchildren.
